Are Your Lips Addicted to Lip Balm?

lip balmAre your lips addicted to Lip Balm?  Did you even know that it is possible?  Some say your lips can become dependant on lip balms.  A product that you think will moisturize and help your lips, could actually be drying them out or making them feel worse.  I’m not saying, stop using lip balms entirely; however, you should check the ingredients, carefully read the usage instructions and limit the use.

You want to avoid products that have Paraben, fragrance, and phenol.  Some medicated lip balms have an exfoliant in them that if used for a prolonged period of time, can actually make dry lips worse.   It is best to use a medicated lip balm before you go to bed.   That way it stays on longer without being disturbed.  However, only a few nights in a row should be necessary to see a positive change in your lips.   To then maintain healed lips, find a lip balm that contains petroleum, aloe, vitamin E, and/or lanolin. These are great for your lips, but do not overuse. Vaseline is also a good product to use at night, and is safe to use during the day.

Parents love to give their kids lip balm to protect their lips.  Many times, we purchase fruity or bubble gum flavored to entice them to put it on.  This may not be a good option.  Kids loved the taste of them and tend to lick their lips more often. You can help prevent dried, chapped lips by drinking plenty of water, avoid licking your lips when outside on windy and/or cold days, use a humidifier in your home during winter months, and limit exposure to the sun.  If you are going to be in the sun for long periods of time, consider using a lip balm with an SPF of at least 15.
