When I was in my 20’s, I loved Black Friday. I worked in Philadelphia and didn’t mind having to go back to work the day after Thanksgiving. When lunchtime arrived, I would head to Wanamakers Department Store and then to various shops on Chestnut Street and begin my Christmas shopping. I walked, so I didn’t have to worry about parking, I didn’t mind the crowds, and I was oblivious to rude shoppers. Now it’s 20-some years later, and I wouldn’t even dream of going shopping at the malls or discount stores on Black Friday. Getting up before the crack of dawn doesn’t appeal to me. Standing in lines five blocks long waiting to get into the store, yuck! Guarding your shopping cart with your life, so that it is not stolen from you when you are in the parking lot heading to your car. . . no thank you! These are some of the stories I heard on the radio for 2009’s Black Friday. For me, that’s not how I want to start my happy holidays.
Although the special pre-dawn specials at some stores really sound appealing, more times than not, I hear that most people cannot get those items and settle for something else more expensive. However, many people prefer doing their shopping online. Cyber Monday was instituted by a handful of retailers five years ago. Today, there are thousands of department stores, electronic stores, online manufactures and direct sales companies, etc. participating in this event. I also hear that many retailers are planning another Cyber Specials Event for December 17, 2009 (the last safe day to have products shipped to ensure delivery before Christmas).
If you are like me, and prefer Cyber Monday, here are some things you might want to consider when shopping online:
- If you considering placing an order online, you will be required to pay by credit card. Before entering a website, type, https, before the site address. You should see a padlock symbol after the website address in your Internet Explorer. This indicates that you have entered into a safe, encrypted site. However, doing this will not fully ensure safety. There are hackers out there, who can still penetrate sites. If you do not see the padlock symbol, check the site itself for its security guidelines. For example, my website will show that it is “McAfee Secure. Tested Daily” and then will show the date last tested.
- Are you getting the best bargain for your money? Have you compared prices with other sites or the store ads that come with your local paper?
- Does the site that you are considering purchasing items have free shipping? Is that free shipping contingent on a minimum purchase or is it for any size order?
- Lastly, keep all receipts. Even though you should be receiving an email confirmation receipt from the site from which you ordered, you should print the confirmation receipt that appears on that site. Keep all of your online holiday paper receipts together, and consider placing all of your holiday shopping email confirmations in one folder within your email account. This will keep you organized in case you need to refer to them at any point in time.
Please share your thoughts, as well as any good Cyber Monday specials that you may have found. Happy shopping everyone!
